Hula With Moanalani Beamer
Hula: Ke Ao Nani
Moanalani Beamer is an accomplished hula instructor and conducts workshops in Hawai'i, the U.S., Japan and Europe. From when she was a little girl, Moana has been immersed in the world of hula.
In this beautiful and unique series of lessons, Moanalani teaches a rare "hula noho" or sitting hula, based on a song written by one of Hawaii's most revered scholars, Mary Kawena Puku'i. This piece is called "Ke Ao Nani" , The Beautiful World. It is performed with 'ili'ili, or smooth water-worn stones, held in each hand.
When you come to visit us in Hawaii, you can find these stones where the rivers meet the sea. For now, go to the Garden Department of your local hardware or home improvement store and look in their landscaping supplies for stones that fit the description in the video. You can also find stones like this in a stream bed, or from our friends at Nakani O Hula, a hula supply store on the island of Maui.
As you learn this hula, you may find yourself on a journey to a unique and beautiful place in the human heart.
